Neil Blomkamp to Give Us a Proper ‘Alien’ Sequel!

ripley-hicks

Twentieth Century Fox officially announced this week that District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp will helm the next chapter in its immensely popular Alien franchise. Ridley Scott will produce the new sequel, which will reportedly follow the events in Scott’s Prometheus 2, currently in early development.

Blomkamp said on Instagram:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

Blomkamp scored the gig by taking to Instagram to post concept art for a new Alien sequel he had dreamt up. The art, which sees the return of Ellen Ripley and Corporal Hicks, caught the imaginations of fans hankering for a true Alien sequel after Scott’s kinda-cool, but mostly disappointing prequel Prometheus. That excitement apparently reached Fox.

Fox has released a trailer for its new event series “Wayward Pines,” a 10-episode mystery from Chad Hodge (”Playboy Club”) and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense). Set to premiere May 14, the show’s all-star cast includes Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino, Terence Howard, Toby Jones and Juliette Lewis.

The trailer is pretty intriguing and exciting, presenting a “Twin Peaks” meets “Stepford Wives” vibe. The cast is impressive and promise rich, mysterious characters. If Shyamalan is in Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs mode, this could be mind-fuckingly awesome.

Based on Blake Crouch’s novel “Pines,” the series follows Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Dillon) on assignment to find two missing federal agents in the Idaho town of Wayward Pines. What he discovers instead are mysterious and sinister happenings that threaten the very core of who he is as a person.
