TriStar Pictures 1987 kid horror-comedy The Monster Squad is now available on Blu-ray. The disc comes packed with extras such as director and cast commentaries, deleted and extended scenes, photo gallery, original trailer and TV spot, and a not-to-be-missed 80 minute featurette entitled “Monster Squad Forever.”
Directed by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, RoboCop 3) and written by Shane Black (Last Action Hero), The Monster Squad centers on a group of tween horror fans who discover Dracula is not only real, but has come to America in search of an amulet that will allow him to bring forth the forces of evil.
Director Rob Cohen (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) expressed interest last year in possibly shooting a Monster Squad remake, but so far no official plans have materialize. Dekker, for his part, is none too keen on the idea of a reboot.
In an interview with ShockTillYouDrop, he said:
Rob Cohen is interested in doing a remake of The Monster Squad… I think making a remake of Monster Squad is a tragic and stupid idea. The movie preceded a whole generation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Goosebumps and there’s a show now called The Troop, we’ve seen it so much, why do it now?
I’m sure that felt like a kick to the nards to most Monster Squad fans.
