Hilary Swank is set to produce and star in a big screen adaptation of the Radical comic “Shrapnel.” The 36-year-old Oscar winner will play Samantha “Sam” Vijaya, a toothy, but sexy, former war hero in the year 2250 who takes up arms to defend colonists on Venus, the planet where she lives in exile.
Says Swank:
I am a fan of the work that Barry Levine and Radical Pictures are doing in the comic and action arena. Shrapnel and specifically the character of Sam offer me the opportunity to dive into an exciting character with many layers and depth that are rarely found in this genre.
Swank’s genre creds include Dark Castle’s end-of-days frightener The Reaping, Paramount’s sci-fi actioner The Core, Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, Chris Nolan’s Insomnia, Sam Raimi’s The Gift, and, most recently, the Hammer Films stalker-thriller The Resident.
Favreau—not one to let genre fans down—captured the glorious moment on video, giving us a glimpse of the girls as they play with lightsabers, figurines, and Darth Vader’s helmet. Foot and shoe fetishists will also enjoy the sexy, strappy stripper-heels on display throughout (not that I know of such things).
Universal is laying out the welcome mat to its upcoming psych-thriller Dream House with a lengthy trailer that gives just about everything away but the kitchen sink. Directed by six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot), the film stars Daniel Craig as a dedicated family man investigating the murders that occurred in his recently purchased home.
Costars include Rachel Weisz (Oz, the Great and Powerful), Naomi Watts (The Ring), Marton Csokas (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King), Rachel Fox (“Desperate Housewives”), and Elias Koteas (Shutter Island).

OK, so it’s not really Twilight actress Kristen Stewart. Still, we can learn a lot from this K-Stu impersonator’s keen observations of the notoriously awkward starlet. I, for one, now see potential stardom in my brooding tween daughter’s future and will fully encourage her self-cutting, socially bumbling ways (Hello Hollywood!).
Sony Pictures has released a teaser for director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spiderman. Based on Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley’s “Ultimate Spiderman” comics, the reboot finds Spidey, now played by Andrew Garfield and his very tall hair, back in high school.
Costarring are Emma Stone (Zombieland), Rhys Ifans (Hannibal Rising), Dennis Leary (Demolition Man), Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), Sally Field (Forrest Gump), Embeth Davidtz (Army of Darkness), Campbell Scott (Exorcism of Emily Rose), Irrfan Khan (Hisss) and Chris Zylka (Shark Night 3-D).
The Amazing Spiderman arrives in theaters on July 3, 2012.
Dutch actress Carice Van Houten has been cast for season two of HBO’s Emmy-nominated fantasy drama “Game of Thrones.” The 34-year-old looker will play sorceress Melisandre from the eastern kingdom of Asshai.
Van Houten’s genre creds include Relativity Media’s underrated organ-harvesting actioner Repo Men and director Christopher Smith’s (Severance) bubonic plague thriller Black Death, in which she played a vicious necromancer.
She’ll next star opposite Clive Owen (Children of Men) in Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s (28 Weeks Later) creepy new ghost story Intruders, in theaters Oct. 7.
“Game of Thrones” begins to shoot its second season at the end of the month.
Fright fans who think they’ve seen it all at Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights have got another thing coming. Universal announced today that a maze based on the studio’s upcoming prequel/remake The Thing will be featured at its Orlando and Hollywood theme parks.
A collaborative effort between park designers and the film’s producers, the maze replicates the sets, monsters, sounds and music featured in the new thriller, which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and opens on Oct. 14.
Halloween Horror Nights runs on selected nights from Sept. 23-thru-Oct. 31. Mrs. Muertos and I have attended the last four and highly recommend y’all check it out (but go Front-of-the-Line to avoid ridiculous waits and to have a laugh at those less fortunate than you ). You can see some of our pics here.
More on the maze:
The new haunted house will offer guests an unprecedented first-hand preview of the much-anticipated thriller in advance of its October 14 release. Guests will find themselves in a series of face-to-face encounters with “The Thing,” an alien creature that can transform itself into an exact replica of any living being.
“The Thing” maze will recreate the spine-chilling suspense from the film, confronting guests with the paranoia and fear that comes from being trapped inside the film’s Antarctic Thule station. The shape-shifting alien could be anywhere or anything. Will they survive?
Eerily authentic, “The Thing” maze will feature elaborately designed and disturbingly real alien creatures and sets. They will match the film’s terrifying intensity and provoke both a memorable and disturbing experience.
Universal’s theme parks have partnered with the film’s producers, Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman to create an experience that is authentic to the film. The sets, audio, musical score, creature and character references are all based on the thriller.
I tried watching “Fringe” when it debuted on Fox in ’08, but was turned off by John Noble’s annoyingly cliched and over-the-top mad scientist character Dr. Walter Bishop. I’ve heard great stuff about the ratings-challenged show since, especially something about an alternative reality, but I just can’t get past the Doc.
Anna Torv, the 32-year-old Aussie who plays FBI agent Olivia Dunham, however, seems like a pretty good actress and a very nice lady—and by that I mean she’s living a whole other alternate reality in my mind when I’m showering in the morning.
Aimee Garcia, the pretty 32-year-old star of the short-lived series “Trauma” and “Off the Map,” has scored a recurring role on season six of Showtime’s award-winning serial killer drama “Dexter.”
The Mexican-Puerto Rican babe will play Jamie Batista, Sgt. Angel Batista’s (David Zayas) younger sister and Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) new nanny hire for his now two-year-old son Harrison.
Garcia, who was also a recurring on “George Lopez,” joins season six newcomers Edward James Olmos, Colin Hanks, Mos Def, “True Blood’s” Mariana Klaveno, Molly Parker, Josh Cooke, Billy Brown and “Heroes'” Brea Grant.
Those who would rather wait to see the preview online rather than risk sitting next to a fat person (Not you. You’re just big-boned) in a robe and pointy hat, your patience has paid off.
